ABSTRACT

The provision of effective supervision is a critical facet of the internship year. To promote such positive outcomes requires complex and continuous interactions between interns, site supervisors, and university trainers. In this chapter, supervision is defined, supervision models are introduced and considered, and unique features of supervising school psychology interns are distinguished. Although the chapter is theoretically grounded, pragmatic roles and responsibilities of interns and supervisors within the supervision process are explored. Topics include being prepared for supervision, setting and monitoring developmental goals, thinking critically and analytically about mistakes and successes, navigating across multiple supervisors, the communication process between internship sites and training programs, and making the most out of supervision time. The design and implementation of formative and summative evaluation processes as part of supervision are also discussed.
