ABSTRACT
After 1898 the Provinces were each put in charge of a Provincial Governor who was answerable to the Governor General of the Sudan for the state of his province. There was an allocation of duties to a staff of District Commissioners, and a number of police, a clerical staff and other officials were appointed. The District Commissioner was responsible for the administration of the law and the fair distribution of taxation. As the local representative of the Governor in his district he heard cases, supervised the police, settled feuds, caused roads to be built and dealt with economic matters. He was called on to deal with any type of trouble and with all aspects of native life.
