ABSTRACT

This chapter considers what instruments music teacher are likely to find, or even to buy, and how they may suit students with special/additional needs. The world music instruments used most often in schools are generally quite low tech and mostly percussion. The guitar, like the drum kit, in some areas, can be perceived to be cool, and this is motivating for students with learning and behaviour difficulties. All pupils need to be given the opportunity to try to play the different orchestral instruments as well as to hear them. Pupils who are blind or visually impaired will be able to learn any instrument they choose. The recent upsurge in interest in pop singing and the many television competitions for singers have enthused unprecedented numbers of pupils. For pupils with challenging behaviour or MLD the microphone offers power and street cred. Choosing an instrument for a young person with special/additional needs is broadly the same as choosing one for anyone else.
