ABSTRACT

Pupils learn in different ways at different times, and unpredictably at different times of the day. Notation was used originally as an aide-mémoire to show the direction of the melody. Guitar tab is a visual representation of the six strings of a guitar where the number of the fret to be pressed down is written on the string to be played. Guitar boxes are a line drawing representation of the first four frets on a guitar with dots to show the player which frets to hold for which chord, always also naming the chord. The Song Sheets allow for improvisation and reinterpretation and are designed to work within the aural tradition. A lot of behaviour management in schools seems to revolve around identifying poor behaviour, naming offenders and even writing up their names on a board for all to see. Pace involves minimal instruction and progressing to the next stage without leaving anyone behind or keeping anyone back.
