ABSTRACT

Antisemitic articles are occasionally published in the Turkish press, mostly in Islamist or nationalist right-wing newspapers. Before discussing the Turkish media's role in spreading and provoking antisemitism, the Turkish media and its relation with the government should be noted. A common feature in the Turkish media is that it depicts 'the Jews' as playing a central role in everything that is wrong with the world. Many Turkish newspaper editors and journalists respond to signals from their government and alter their tone accordingly – much more so than in the loosely regulated American market, significant players in the Turkish media have business interests that depend on good relations with the ruling party. On March 26, 2012, Turkey's Jewish community protested against a Turkish commercial that used old film footage of Adolf Hitler to sell shampoo. A criminal investigation was indeed opened, but the prosecutor ultimately decided that there were insufficient grounds to open a case against the offending parties.
