ABSTRACT

Executive summary: Rapid application development (RAD) is both a general term applied to various alternatives to the traditional waterfall method and also the name of a method attributed to James Martin during the 1980s at IBM. This approach is seen by some as an evolution of the Spiral model defined by Barry Boehm. Martin’s method became popular during the reengineering fad and is sometimes associated with it. Rapid prototyping is one of the key elements of this approach. While seldom seen today in its original form, RAD was one of the influences that lead to Agile.
