ABSTRACT

Each group is further divided by their speci‡c vertical elements and type of materials, which resist lateral seismic loads. The structural systems in Table 12.2-1 also categorize according to detail requirements and Seismic Design Category regarding height limitations. During the building design process, speci‡cally the schematic design phase, various

structural systems are often considered and vetted for a proposed building. The basics of a structural system is usually developed as part of the conceptual architectural design, that is, the architectural constraints that dictate the possible materials and spaces to be created also largely control the selection and design process of the structural systems for both gravity and lateral forces. Each of the six basic systems has certain advantages and disadvantages depending upon their application including the economics of each. Careful consideration is required when selecting a system for a proposed building.
