ABSTRACT

Nowadays non-destructive techniques with fast implementation used for structure sounding, such as GPR, are very relevant.

GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) was initially used in geophysics to explore the ground and so it was then adapted for use in civil engineering, in order to inspect the pavement (cavity detection) in airports (Clemena, 2003). Later, radar was used to detect cavities in concrete structures or delamination in bridge decks (Morey, 1998), (Huston et al., 2002), to locate pipes (Cariou et al., 1997) or reinforcements (Shaw et al., 2004), (Hugenschmidt, 2002), to calculate the thicknesses of slabs or wearing course of the roadways (Huston et al., 2002) and to determine the moisture content and chloride contamination in concrete (Balayssac et al., 2007).
