ABSTRACT

The mid-1970s witnessed individual computers being linked electronically to form the basis of computer mediated scientific collaboration, social interaction, and networking. Sexting images can also be posted on social networking websites where they can be downloaded and shared. The potential consequences of such exposure are far ranging and can include legal charges of child pornography and indecent exposure as well as the potential for leaked images to be used by others in an attempt to blackmail or intentionally humiliate. Children, especially adolescents, often believe or feel that exploitation and crime do not happen to them—but rather happen to “other kids.” Online risks to children are a public health concern, and thus a risk assessment screening should be conducted with parents and children. National studies have found that the majority of youth are using the Internet as a venue for social interaction, idea sharing, artistic creations, photography, school work, as well as online journaling or blogging.
