ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by asking the question: who gets to have a relationship? To answer this question, this chapter challenges readers to explore their assumptions around human rights, disability, and dignity. Next, the sexual rights of intellectually disabled people are discussed along in the context of relevant excerpts from major human rights declarations, discussions of selected case law on sexuality and disability, and quotes from news stories about sexuality and intellectual disability. Information on techniques for working with families and caregivers around sexuality issues is provided. The laws surrounding marriage and the rights that come with it are examined. Finally, non-mainstream sexual identities and behavior are discussed from a human rights perspective. The chapter concludes with a case study of an intellectually disabled couple.
