ABSTRACT

It was in the 18th century that the idea of interconnection between psychological and forensic aspects of law experienced rapid development in Russia, like in many other countries. The need to take into account the psychological make-up of the criminal when investigating crimes and the insight into criminal behaviour was expressed by Ivan Pososhkov (1652-1729), a prominent Russian economist, writer and public figure. In his work titled A Book on Poverty and Wealth (1724), he suggested various methods for interviewing and interrogating the accused and the witnesses, and explained how to explore the evidence given by false witnesses in order to obtain extensive information that will expose their lies, and also recommended to break criminals into groups to avoid the bad influence of the worst ones over the less depraved ones (Pososhkov, 2010).
