ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is to educate physicians on International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10), so that they can properly document all necessary information that the billing staff will require to accurately and thoroughly complete the billing process. It is intended to give physicians an understanding of the proper implementation of ICD-10 and repercussions of improper coding regarding all insurance billing, including Medicare, Worker's Compensation, and Personal Injury. The book analyses updated coding for the ICD-10-Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) book, 2017 edition. Worker's Compensation and Personal Injury is especially complex due to the differences in State law and the fact that ICD-10 concepts have yet to be examined by legal authority. GEM refers to software that allows users to enter an ICD-9 code and get a display of an ICD-10 code or codes that can be used in lieu of the ICD-9 code.
