ABSTRACT
Functionally, a stem cell represents an undifferentiated cell that can produce a progeny of other stem cells (self-renewal) or that divides asymmetrically into another stem cell (thereby retaining its undifferentiated status) and a transient amplifying cell, which has lost its capacity for unlimited self-renewal and differentiates down a certain pathway (Figure 5.3).
