The 'marked file' reveals few reviews written by women in the early 1870s, Geraldine Jewsbury's name was still a constant presence, but she was by then confined to the children's department. And yet, there were a few remarkable newcomers, remarkable because of their blatantly feminist inclinations: Helen Zimmern, Mathilde Blind and Millicent Garrett Fawcett.
