Linear extrapolation to lower concentrations was applied as a conservative, non-threshold approach in absence of consensus on low dose effects. This approach resulted in a concentration of 0.004 μg/L that theoretically corresponds to an excess lifetime cancer risk of 10−6 in the Netherlands (Fig. 1).
