ABSTRACT

Dissolution testing of conventional and non-conventional dosage

forms was introduced in the 1960s. Dissolution testing is a

compendial test that is used by all pharmacopeias to evaluate drug

release. Apart from the standardized tests, there are several non-

compendial methods which are qualified and validated for use in

drug release testing. This chapter is divided into five sections. The

first section provides an introduction stating the importance of

dissolution testing. The second section briefly discusses existing

compendial methods along with any non-compendial modifications.

The third section describes non-compendial apparatus for different

types of dosage forms. The fourth section explains the various

detection techniques such as UV imaging with Raman spectroscopy,

FTIR-ATR, and fiber optics. The final section provides a summary of

all findings.
