ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to select a topic for students and researchers study. Sources for the paper topic should be selected based on basic research or applied research or both. In basic research, or theoretical research, students and researchers will study the basic concepts and reasons for the phenomena relating to pure science or engineering. Basic research does not lead to any applications; it is original or basic in character. Research on improving a theory is also referred to as basic research. For example, the quantum theory is applicable to a system provided the system satisfies certain specific conditions. Applied research is the outcome of direct or indirect applications. Such research is of practical use to the activity. Applied research is concerned with real-life issues such as research on increasing the efficiency of solar cells, increasing the quantum yield of materials, preparing drug delivery to cancer cells. Obviously, these have immediate potential applications.
