ABSTRACT

Since 1960 improvements in the technology and manufacturing

of prostheses combined with advances in surgical and anaesthetic

techniques have greatly increased the effectiveness of total hip

arthroplasty (THA). Hip replacement (Fig. 8.1) is currently the most

common orthopaedic operation, with patient-recorded outcome

measures indicating that it is arguably one of the most successful

medical or surgical interventions that is available [1-3].
