ABSTRACT
Nurses frequently take a lead role in the management of chronic diseases. Those who do take a lead role should be adequately qualified in that particular disease area to ensure the safety and quality of patient care. Qualifications can range from post registration awards or certificates through to post-registration diplomas and degrees up to Masters’ level. Competencies are gained through experience and supported by protocols. The multidisciplinary team approach in chronic disease management indicates that supplementary prescribing may be used for the management of chronic illness and health needs. Supplementary prescribers must have a thorough knowledge of the area they prescribe in, and of drugs and drug interactions, a clear management plan agreed with the independent prescriber and the patient, and be aware of their own limitations.
