145At this point in his expedition, Low became heavily involved with an outbreak of severe jaundice at Castries, St Lucia (see Chapter 4). Was it simply malignant malaria (P. falciparum infection) or yellow fever? His careful observations initially supported the former diagnosis, but as time passed he obtained firm evidence of the latter at post-mortem. It seems clear that both diseases were in fact present.
