ABSTRACT

163The final phase of Low’s expedition concentrated largely on mosquito-control. This had now become his major interest, and he obviously intended making a mark for the LSTM in the Caribbean in the same way that Ross (see Chapter 8) had done in West Africa. Finally, after some 15 months, he was summoned home ‘as soon as possible’ by Manson – presumably in order to prepare him for the ‘sleeping sickness’ expedition to Uganda. 1 In view of his ‘obsession’ with filariae, together with his London observations, Manson clearly favoured Filaria (Mansonella) perstans as the likely candidate as the cause of the ‘negro lethargy’.
