ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the field and experimental data of the three horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland cells planted with common reeds and having different media which include gravel, pieces of plastic pipes, and shredded tire rubber chips. The experimental work could be divided in two stages, the set up one and steady stage. These two stages were performed during two sampling periods in years 2009 and 2010. The data obtained from field and experimental works were analyzed in forms of tables and graphs. After the preparation of treatment cells, eight tests were performed at different periods from 5/9/2009 to 10/4/2010. These tests are to determine the porosity of each media, in order to calculate the actual retention time for different used discharges. The wetland system in Samaha is fed intermittently with a flow rate given in two sequences of about 20 to 25 min feeding separated by 35 to 40 min rest period.
