ABSTRACT

Biodegradable polymers are attractive materials for manufacturers and environmentalists because they can be degraded rather quickly, yielding environmentally safe products such as water, biomass, carbon dioxide or methane. Development and use of new, environmentally friendly materials, which can be involved in biosphere cycles, corresponds to the idea of environmentally safe, sustainable industrial development. Biological technologies are based on using the potential of the living systems and are aimed at friendly and harmonic interactions between humans and their environment. In order to improve the effectiveness of treatment and quality of life, reconstructive medicine needs high technologies and novel, highly functional and specific, materials, including devices capable of reproducing biological functions of living systems. The achievements in molecular and cell biology have provided a wide range of opportunities for creating fundamentally new effective biomedical technologies, which can be used to restore injured tissues and organs and treat serious human metabolic disorders.
