ABSTRACT

Orientation is the foundation for attitudes that may stay in place as long as that staff member remains with the company. Orientation also involves socialization which includes the culture, mission, and philosophy of the organization. The return on investment (ROI) on the orientation training is too great and its impact on future quality and turnover too certain to dismiss it because of time challenges. New staff members receive orientation from their fellow staff members in an informal way and from the organization in a formal manner. Socialization implies the absorbing of a new staff member into the culture of the company. Socialization and orientation training programs for new staff members take priority in development and implementation; however, once completed, work on other training aspects can begin. Feedback from new staff members is one method of evaluating the socialization and orientation program.
