ABSTRACT

Work–life balance is a broad concept, including proper prioritization between “work” on one hand and “life” on the other. The best individual work–life balance varies over time, often on a daily basis. For an individual who is married and has children, work–life balance is different than for a single or married individual without kids. The felt need to make an accommodation influenced the women’s choice of a career or a work site. Work–life balance initiatives include flexible work arrangements, leave arrangements, dependent care assistance, and general services. Work-to-family conflict, family-to-work conflict, and commitment to the organization were related to intention to turnover. The results highlight the importance of workplace culture in enabling an environment that is supportive of work–life balance and consequently use of initiatives that are offered by the organization. The use of work–life balance initiatives is useful for employees who are aware of the availability of more work–life balance initiatives.
