ABSTRACT
Transplant surgery did not exist before the mid-1960s and, its possibility was derided by many medical scientists simply because the immunosuppression protocols needed for preventing the patient’s immune system from turning against the new organ were so poor. Indeed, at the time, the large doses of immunosuppressive drugs or whole body x-irradiation to destroy the immune system that was necessary to prevent organ rejection left the patient vulnerable to deadly infections.
