ABSTRACT

Physician engagement requires active communication, meaning that one purposefully seek the understanding of the other party during discussions. To initiate engagement, start with communication aimed at seeking an understanding of the physicians' interest and involvement. Engaging physicians is about creating a unified vision and working to achieve the vision. This chapter focuses on the Communication and Metrics subdomains. Communication is about more than having meetings. It is about establishing an active and open dialogue with common terms and common goals. The Metrics subdomain involves the creation and evaluation of common measurements. It is less about the data and calculations and more about tracking the success of a common vision. Metrics are certainly better than no metrics, but ownership of the metric determines how effective it is at engaging physicians. Significant effort is spent on creating and gathering metrics that physicians do not own.
