Figure 48.1 illustrates the signicant points of a synchronous motor; the principal components of the motor are the stator, the rotor, and the frame. The stator core is built up using thin silicon laminations and insulated by a surface coating, to minimize any eddy current and hysteresis losses. Axial slots within the stator carry three-phase windings and are wound for a specic number of poles equal to the rotor poles.
