ABSTRACT

By interrelating the concerns of safe mining, mine productivity and other region-specific parameters, as described in the earlier chapters, it emerges that ‘environment’ is the basic link in the development of the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region. An integrated strategy and a multidisciplinary approach for planning in the Himalayas can minimize the lacunae already identified. In such sensitive areas, mining and the environment should be considered together; specifically, the strategy should be an environmentoriented development (Moddie, 1980).
