ABSTRACT

Much of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to work.

As you can see from the preceding chapters, manufacturing has come a long way since Homo habilis manufactured the first stone tools 2.6 million years ago. For the most part of this period, progress was rather slow. It took many millennia from the first manufacturing technique of cutting stone to the second of joining components. Similarly, it took generations from the first full-time specialists during the Neolithic revolution to the first use of water and wind power, the first standards of the Harappan culture, and the rising prestige of manufacturing with the guilds of the medieval age.
