ABSTRACT

In the beginning of the twenty-first century, a revolution in energy production came in the form of shale gas. In the shale gas revolution that has changed the oil and gas industry, Barnett shale has been at the core of it and its impact has been enormous. With technological advancements, Barnett shale of Texas was the first shale play to be exploited economically. Rapid expansion of shale gas in the natural gas energy mix has changed the energy geopolitics and governments all over the world are formulating strategy to assess and exploit shale gas resources available in their countries. The two technologies that were pivotal in the shale gas revolution are hydraulic fracturing and horizontal well drilling. Shale gas is to remain an important constituent in the energy basket for decades. Fracturing of shale formation requires a huge volume of water, which has been a big hurdle in shale gas development around the world.
