ABSTRACT

This chapter gives examples of how government agencies and individuals in Australia, Canada and Norway handled natural disasters such as floods, forest fires and a tsunami. In several instances, social media played an important and vital role, but the case studies in this chapter also focus on the important role of leaders such as mayors or department heads. An official report on the flood in Calgary showed that the city handled crisis communication exceptionally well, while the tsunami in Asia provided many examples of what can go wrong when you have not planned for a major crisis abroad.
