ABSTRACT
This chapter shows how the manufacturing division of Merck & Co., Inc., known as MMD, developed a holistic approach to establishing and sustaining virtual communities that harness the energy of the workforce and also deliver tangible business results. Global science technology & commercialization (GSTC) is the technical organization of the MMD whose primary function is to perform late stage product development, launch and ongoing technical support of the manufacture of all pharmaceutical products. Community management is an emerging field and the path is still ill-defined; however, the community steward role has the potential to be very exciting and gratifying. Over the years the virtual technical network (VTN) has been led by a remarkable group of leaders and sponsors, particularly Mike Thien whose courage, leadership, and vision got us to where we are today. In addition, Mike's leadership team has always been there for invaluable support and guidance.
