ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the practical issues that need to be considered in design of wood buildings. Several topics are covered including cross-laminated timber (CLT) used in modern wood multistory buildings, rules of thumb for wood design, and fire design of heavy timber members. Wood buildings are undergoing a renaissance as taller buildings are now constructed of wood than have been done in the past. Examples of existing multistory wood buildings include the nine-story Stadthaus building in the United Kingdom and the ten-story CLT building in Australia. CLT panels were used for the walls, the elevator cores, and the floor slabs as well as the roof slabs. One important consideration in multistory wood buildings is the total cumulative axial shortening as well as differential movement between dissimilar materials. The Stadthaus building is a hybrid structure with a podium level or first story built out of reinforced concrete and the upper eight stories built out of wood using a platform framing system.
