ABSTRACT

We often predict something in our daily life: football scores, election outcomes, stock prices, and so on. We usually end up with the odds much less than 50/50 and realize that the prediction was either too bold or too foolish. When we are right, however, we feel good even if it is out of sheer luck. We definitely feel very good if it is out of a calculated and deliberate effort. Predicting something and being right is a very satisfying and an exhilarating experience, especially when the object is as foreign as electrons. In this chapter, we will run some actual Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and venture to predict the electron’s activities with our scientific knowledge and, hopefully, experience that exceptional feeling.
