ABSTRACT

Once opportunities for waste reduction have been identied in a pollution prevention opportunity assessment, source reduction techniques should be implemented rst. Source reduction involves the reduction of wastes at their source before they are generated, usually within a process, and is the most desirable option in the waste management/pollution prevention hierarchy. By avoiding the generation of waste, source reduction eliminates the costs and energy and materials utilization associated with the proper handling and disposal of the waste. A wide variety of facilities can adopt procedures to minimize the quantity of waste that they generate.
