ABSTRACT

The printing and publishing industry consists of establishments engaged in printing by one or more of the common printing processes, such as letterpress, lithography, gravure, or screen. The industry also includes establishments that perform services for the printing trade, such as bookbinding, typesetting, engraving, photoengraving, and electrotyping. Printing establishments are scattered all over the United States, with the largest concentrations being in California and Texas. Those two states share approximately 12% and 7% of the industry, respectively. New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Ohio each share approximately 5% of the total. The industry is characterized by a large number of small establishments. As of 2013, there were approximately 25,000 facilities located in the United States (U.S. Census Bureau 2015).
