ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the apparatus needed and procedures to be followed to perform testing of columnar ion exchange systems on a bench or laboratory scale.

Bench-scale ion exchange systems are used to screen resins for their selectivity in removing a constituent to determine the operating capacity of a particular ion exchange resin in a particular ionic form, to remove a particular target ion from a wastewater stream, and to develop design and operating data for a new ion exchange system. It is also used to test or evaluate the performance of a newly developed resin. Data developed from bench-scale testing are often used to validate computer models. The techniques are basically the same and modified as required.
