ABSTRACT

In the healthcare and well-being industry, technology applications answering the future challenges are gaining more and more interest. For example, the lack of personnel in nursing homes is a significant problem, and the situation is not getting any easier. The current trend is also to help the elderly to live at home instead of caring homes. In addition, as the importance of home nursing is expected to grow in general, the freedom of movement achieved by technology is especially significant. Rather than replacing human contact, technology should be assistive and take care of certain monitoring tasks, thus saving the time of the professional staff for more important tasks. Technology should also provide security and confidence to live in full capacity. In this chapter, we introduce the possibilities and challenges of radio frequency identification (RFID)-based applications in healthcare and well-being contexts.
