ABSTRACT
This chapter explains how to create a model while defining materials and constructions and evaluates their impact on the energy consumption of buildings. It starts with a tutorial on evaluating the impact of thermal mass in the envelope by comparing the performance of lightweight and heavyweight external wall construction. Learners can also find a method for calculating the thickness of insulation on the roof or external walls. The tutorials cover analysis of roof insulation location (overdeck or underdeck), use of a cool roof and radiant barrier. The chapter follows with tutorial on evaluating the impact of the air gap between roof layers, the impact of surface reflectance, the impact of roof underdeck radiant barrier, and the impact of a green roof.
