ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to size and model the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Out of the three tutorials, one explains the effect of HVAC operating criteria on energy consumption. Often, thermostats of HVAC are operated by sensing the air temperature, and the same criterion is also used for the evaluation of thermal comfort hours through simulation. This tutorial shows the difference in alternative approaches using the case of 'operative temperature', that is, a combination of air temperature and mean radiant temperature. The second tutorial explains the method of sizing HVAC systems, and the third one covers the effect of using different calculation algorithms for performing HVAC calculations in the simulation. Cooling design calculations are carried out to determine the capacity of the mechanical cooling equipment required to meet the hottest summer design weather conditions likely to be encountered at the site location.
