ABSTRACT

Citrus is the most abundant fruit tree crop in the world. Its production and consumption have grown rapidly from an average harvest of 57 × 106 metric tons per year during the 1980s, up to in excess of 115 × 106 metric tons in the 2010/2011 season. Among the most important citrus are oranges (70.6 million tons), mandarins (25.5 million tons), lemons and limes (12.9 million tons), and grapefruits (6.4 million tons) (FAO 2012).
