The Case for Standardizing Care The standardization of care processes is a critical first step toward improvement in clinical care. At Seattle Children’s, the initial standard work created to manage hospitalized patients with asthma was a resounding success with the development of a standardized respiratory scoring tool used by nurses and respiratory therapists that promoted weaning of respiratory treatments independent of providers. This resulted in a decreased length of stay without any associated increase in readmissions.
