ABSTRACT

Ubiquitous mobile devices such as smartphones are nowadays an integral part of people’s daily lives for computing and communication. Millions of mobile apps are made available to the smartphone users through app stores such as Android Play Store and iPhone AppStore. These mobile apps leverage the cameras, microphones, GPS receivers, accelerometers, and other sensors available on the phones to sense the physical world and provide personalized alerts and guidance to the smartphone users. This chapter presents the background of mobile sensing and its applications to everyday life.
