ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) and how they assist in mitigating threatening behavior and threats. EAP professionals play an important role in the mitigation and management of threatening behavior and threats by being an integral part of the threat management process. They can provide training workshops on workplace cooperation and conflict resolution as well as workplace violence prevention. A manager and/or HR personnel would contact the EAP professional for assistance in handling the troubled employee. EAP, in consultation with outside specialists, test the employee for any chemical dependency, and depending on the situation, a treatment plan is developed and the employee may be monitored for a period of time. It is important that threat management team (TMT) members develop a close relationship with EAP partners when discussing cases that may be referred to the team. As TMT members, they provide counsel and expertise to the TMT from a mental health perspective.
