ABSTRACT

GroupConnect is a recent wireless technology that has all the features of mobile clouds but also pools resources of an entire group into a single virtual wireless node that can enjoy boosted throughput and otherwise optimize resources both inside the group and on the in- and out-group border. GroupConnect can be applied to vehicular networks in the same way as it has been applied to human wireless networks before, where the largest distinction between the two lies in mobility patterns. This chapter talks specifically about vehicular clouds which are defined as cloud services running on top of networks of vehicles. This chapter shows that GroupConnect is an essential guarantee that cloud services are feasible in practice. It is also shown that the presence of the global supervisor in form of a cloud service provider simplifies self-organization of vehicles. The two specific cloud services discussed in this chapter are virtual storage and sensor networks.
