ABSTRACT
The gauge transformations considered in Chapter 5 for the electromagnetic field were extended by Yang and Mills [16] to local transformations based on a non-Abelian group. The resulting theories, known as Yang–Mills or gauge theories, provide the basis for a description of electroweak interactions and quantum chromodynamics.
