ABSTRACT
The coating of pharmaceutical dosage forms can be traced back at least a thousand years.1 Sugar coating was introduced relatively recently with pictures depicting the work done using a shallow pan over an open re. The commonly used sugar-coating pan, which rotates on an inclined axle was introduced in the 1800s, and early images show that it was rotated by a hand crank mechanism.2
