ABSTRACT

Introduction The term necrophilia (ancient Greek for the “love” philia of “corpses” nekros) was coined by the Belgian alienist Joseph Guislain in the mid-nineteenth century after reading of the case of Parisian grave robber Sgt. Francois Bertrand who gratified himself sexually by mutilating and engaging in intercourse with the corpses of young women (Vronsky, 2016). Over the years, there has been much disagreement as to what constitutes the fundamental character of necrophilia.
