ABSTRACT

We start this chapter with the examination of strategy and tactics, and how they relate to each other. ese concepts are intertwined like two conjoined twins attached at the head. For the sake of discussion and analysis, we can separate the two concepts, but as a matter of practicality, strategy and tactics should always go hand-in-hand. As the Sun Tzu quote suggests, leaders who concern themselves with tactical matters and ignore the broader strategic concerns are sure to fail in whatever endeavor they undertake. is is true in war, in business, and in critical incident management. e old saying, “can’t see the forest for the trees,” comes to mind when considering how some leaders regard tactics as being more important than strategy. Leaders who place an emphasis on tactics over strategy are likely to get lost in those forests.
